What an incredible day the 2025 Sundial Festival was—a vibrant celebration of community, awareness, and inclusion that brought together over 1,000 guests for a day filled with energy, creativity, and connection.
After early whispers of a gap year, Sundial Festival 2025 came back brighter than ever, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of its hosts who stepped in to offer a venue. Their support ensured the festival not only went ahead but became a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when community partners unite behind a shared purpose.
Held on Sunday 6th July, the festival shone a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of the Leo Lion charitable partners, of which Undershaw is one. And while a few short showers passed through, they were no match for the enthusiasm of the crowds—ponchos on, smiles wide, and spirits soaring.
A Stage for Undershaw Brilliance
At the heart of the day were the inspiring achievements of our Undershaw students. Their creativity, courage, and brilliance were on full display, made possible by the tireless support of Undershaw staff, families, friends, and community partners.
Around lunchtime, the festival audience gathered for what has now become a much‑anticipated highlight: the Undershaw student performances. As always, they delivered something truly special.
James Lindsay, Head of Pastoral Care and Teacher of Music at Undershaw, captured the moment perfectly:
“We were incredibly proud of all those who performed at Sundial Festival. Students from every year group, from KS2 up to Year 11 performed with confidence, enthusiasm and creativity and they displayed an extraordinary range of talents. Performances ranged from moving choir ballads to heartfelt solos to heavy metal drumming to full rock bands. The music performed was diverse and challenging, ranging from Queen to The Smiths to Radiohead to System of a Down. Lyla, in Year 8 also performed her own song, ‘Resilience’ which moved many to tears. The show ended with a staff and student mega-band performing a terrific rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that had the whole crowd joining in.
Many students performed brilliantly on a range of different instruments such as Lewis, Jack and Cleo in Year 10, who between them performed on drums, guitar, piano and voice. It was so lovely to see these Music student leaders not only shining in their own performances but also helping younger groups to flourish by accompanying them on guitar and drums. In addition to all the superb performances it was so lovely to see all of our performers supporting one another with such enthusiasm and kindness. It is these values of kindness, resilience and respect that demonstrate the truly exceptional ethos of Undershaw and made us all so proud.”
Real‑World Learning in Action
This year’s festival also provided meaningful opportunities for Post 16 learners, who took on a variety of work experience roles throughout the event. From stewarding and guest support to behind‑the‑scenes coordination, students thrived in an authentic, fast‑paced environment.
Leilah Sheridan, Head of Employability and Post 16, shared:
“One of the many highlights of the day was seeing our current Post 16 students contributing to the event through a variety of work experience roles. These opportunities are more than just a chance to lend a hand, they are a vital extension of classroom learning, offering students a chance to apply their skills in real-world settings. It was a pleasure to witness their confidence, professionalism, and sense of pride as they engaged with guests and supported the event.
We were especially proud to welcome back some of our alumni, whose presence was both moving and motivating. Listening to Alex and Bill speak so eloquently from the stage was a standout moment. Their reflections on life after Undershaw, their personal growth, and their continued aspirations resonated deeply with the audience. For our current students and their families, these stories were a powerful reminder of the paths that lie ahead and the potential that exists within each young person.”
The alumni Q&A was a standout moment—proof of just how far talent can grow when nurtured in the right environment.
Festival Fun for All Ages
Alongside the performances and learning opportunities, the festival delivered a full day of activities, including:
- Inflatable assault courses
- Giant slides and trampolines
- Climbing walls
- Fairground stall
- Arts & crafts zones
The atmosphere was one of joy, inclusion, and celebration—exactly what the Sundial Festival is known for.
A Community That Makes Magic Happen
A huge thank you goes to Larry and the Leo Lion Foundation for their generosity in hosting and supporting the event. Leo Lion proudly funds the Sundial Festival as part of its wider mission to uplift people, champion inclusion, and help shift the systems that shape our future.
We also extend heartfelt thanks to the sponsors of our raffle, whose generous donations helped us raise an incredible £2,000—funds that contributed to the installation of our new sensory cube at the Arts and Media Centre.
A Day That Showed What Community Really Means
The Sundial Festival was far more than a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of what happens when people come together in support of young people, creativity, and inclusion.
